Xermán Rodríguez: Artista
I arrived into this world with a brush underneath the arm, and begin to draw before I could speak. My future was clearly bound to painting. But life is tricky, dirty, a bitch, it takes and twists you like a small boat in a storm. You try to fight, working hard so that it does not take control of your mind.
At the moment I work in engineering. The work is not very artistic, but like we say, its pays the bills. In what little spare time I have left I dedicate it to painting, I need to paint, because something within me requests and shouts and if I do not respond to it I become like the sad shadow in a corner where the dogs take a piss.
When painting my muse is the female form, not specifically my wife but all women, who with their femininity, their sensitivity, their force, their exciting curves and their sensual forms inspire my body and my soul.
I have always been drawn to curved lines, the alive edges, big contrasts, the colour white and the colour black, everything that has always attracted me to a disturbing visual effect.
Figurative art has always been present in my work, as much in painting as in sculpture. I suppose that a figure says more to me than a cube or a circle.
It is not easy to find an explanation for what one paints, it forms part of you, you are who you are.
Life changes you, one evolves in parallel with the passage of years and to what you paint. You grow as a person and as an artist. Surroundings dictate your influences and what you need to absorb and what is necessary at every moment. The restlessness of your mind pushes one to take a pencil, a paper, and brings you to write and paint, to compose music, to jump, to dance, to sing, to kiss, to run, to shout…, to express ourselves. We need to express ourselves to feel alive. It is the only thing that we as human beings do, and it takes us away, a little, from daily life and away from the society that enslaves us and tries to erase our minds of all spontaneity and madness.
Without doubt madness is bound to the creative process. We must be a little crazy to find something new, we must experiment, be daring, irreverent, evil, perverse, to manage to surprise ourselves first, and secondly to others.
In order to express ourselves and to create, like in any task, it is necessary to organize themselves, to put goals, to look for the balance. The key word is “Balance”.
The space that surrounds us, ourselves, we are all formed by very small particles of energy that cohabit in perfect harmony. It is in us to maintain that balance, that harmony.
